We are looking to piece together the history of Livingstone Road Allotments.
Adrian Stagg at Birmingham City Council has been able to provide us with this information -
I have tracked down some of the history of the site and the summary of our Property records is below :
The original site was an area of 11 acres which was rented from Lord Calthorpe from March 1923 – two acres were released for sand rights and the site was known as the Sandpit.
An area of 7.8 aces purchased in 1927 from Calthorpe. A further 0.8 acres off Wellington Road was purchased in 1929 from a Mr Carr. 1.8 acres was acquired in 1960 initially for Housing but subsequently transferred for allotment use (this had in fact been former war time allotments). 2 acres were transferred to Education in 1972 in connection with a primary school extension.
Do you know anything more about the allotments and it’s history? If you do please get in touch or leave a comment below and we’ll add you information to this page.

Hello
I have been speaking to Mr May regarding the Livingston Road allotments as I am working for a company called Bare Films casting a commercial for Bupa. We are really interested in finding out more about the Livingston Road allotments as I believe they are set against an urban landscape (tower blocks) which sounds visually interesting.
Mr May didn’t have any photographs but mentioned the Seat & Barrow site so I wondered if you may have any email-able images. I saw lots of fantastic pictures under the ‘Allotment Photographs’ section (via Flickr) to the right but wasn’t sure if these were specific to Livingston Road or generic images from a range of allotments?
I look forward to hearing from you.
Best wishes
Dionne
